Notes from meeting about cooperation between GSA and Khio

In Glasgow, 21 april 2017

Present: Marc Baines, Edwin Pickstone, Frances Robertson (GSA) and Karen Disen, Tiril Schrøder (Khio)

The plan is to have a coopreative project, taking place i spring-semester 2018. There will be joint workshops, teacher exchanges, and two exhibitions; one in Glasgow and one in Oslo, at the school galleries.

Blog/webpage

There will be a blog/webpage used in the process. Here we will upload artists to look at, text to read, reflections and documentation of various things happening.

The web-page can be found at https://tirischr.wixsite.com/commoncraft

Title/Theme

The cooperative prosject is called Common Craft, with weight on colloborative practices and translation. There will be a focus on «translation» between traditions, languages and different media.

We will make joint artworks, ans send works back and forth with paper post. Each week students and teachers in each school will work based on reactions to works sent from the orher school, and post these back in envelopes. The reciever will make a translation or new intepretation of the work recieved and send back, working like «chinese whispers». We will translate drawing to text and text to drawing. Look at different ways of thinking of making text and using text. It is OK to print on the drawings and draw on the prints.

GSA starts out first, maing the first batch before christmas 2017, so that Khio will respond to these in the first week of january.

We should pair the students, 1 and 1 or in small groups who respond to each other trough the whole process.

The works must be done on paper, format limited to something that can be foldes and put into an A3 envelope.

The works must be finished by Easter.

Tiril and Karen must make a week by week plan of what can be placed when, and send to GSA.

Students

The student taking part will be 10-15 students in their 3rd and 4th year from GSA, (mostly from Illustration?) and 8-12 students in their 1st to 3rd year from Khio.

The project will be part of the Drawing Lab at Khio, which is an elective course open to students from Art and Craft at Khio.

Visits/workshops

Karen and Tiril will invite Edwin Pickstone through the Erasmus+ programme, to come to Oslo for a week in january and have a Letterpress workshop the the students in the Drawing Lab- course.

Karen and Tiril will try to arrange a study trip to GSA with the students from the Drawing Lab in week 10 or 11 (the beginning of March) 2018. This should last a full school week. In GSA the students from Khio will work with students from GSA.

Writing

We should write an article for Journal of Art and Education, for example focusing on possibilities of cooperation after Brexit. Frances will lead on this, and send out to the rest to get contributions to the text. (FRANCES: did I understand this correctly?)

Exhibitions

The workshops and cooperations will end in an travelling exhibition of the works made, shown in the school galleries at GSA and Khio at the end of spring term 2018, fist in one city, then in the next. Frances will check with GSA when their gallery can be booked. Karen and Tiril will check with Khio about Khios galleries.
