Information text for the exhibition at Seilduken Gallery at Khio, Oslo
This is the text used in the gallery to inform the public about the context of the exhibition, in Norwegian and English:
Mail art-
An exhibition with works by students from Arts and Craft / Graphics and Drawing / Drawing Lab, and Illustration and Drawing / Glasgow School of Art
The semester began with a presentation of «mail art» and the topic of «common craft» and «translation», presented by Edwin Pickstone from Glasgow School of Art (GSA). The same presentation was held for students at GSA.
Common Craft refers to working practically/artistic in groups with the same object/work, and the collective practices found in workshops. Translation refers to the translation across languages (English and Norwegian), translation of culture and art school content - each of us is "institutionalized" to what we think is normal - but in different ways. Translation is also across media, through re-dissemination of words, images and printing, and eventually refers to our exchanges and sharing, and the unexpected results. An important part of the project was to accept chances and mistakes, and not let the work be too precious for others could do what they wanted with them.
Throughout the semester, the students sent each other drawings, collages and prints in the mail, and both sides worked on, or new work based on, the recieved ones. In this way, the students at the two schools have had a dialogue with each other through their work.
GSA and Khio have also had a joint workshop in Glasgow in March, where students at both schools worked together, and at the end had a 3 day show in GSA's Reid Building that showed the results. After the workshop, students still have to work with drawings, and a selection of the exchanged works are displayed in the exhibition at Seilduken Galleri. The exhibition will also be shown in the GSA gallery later this year.

En utstilling med arbeider av studenter ved Kunst og Håndverk/Grafikk og Tegning/Tegnelabben og Illustration and Drawing/Glasgow School of Art
1-3 års studentene på Tegnelabben har gjennom vårsemesteret hatt et felles «mail art» prosjekt med studentene fra 3 og 4 år ved Glasgow School of Art (GSA).
Semesteret startet med en presentasjon av «mail art», og av tematikken «common craft» og «translation», presentert av Edwin Pickstone fra Glasgow School of Art. Samme presentasjon ble holdt for studentene ved GSA.
Common Craft viser til det å arbeide praktisk/kunstnerisk i grupper med samme objekt/verk, og den kollektive praksis som finnes i verkstedspraksis. Translation/Oversettelse refererer til oversettelsen på tvers av språk (engelsk og norsk), oversettelse av kultur og kunstskoleinnhold - hver av oss er "institusjonalisert" til det vi tror er normalt - men på forskjellige måter. Oversettelse er også på tvers av medier, gjennom re-formidling av ord, bilder og utskrift, og til slutt refererer det til våre utvekslinger og deling, og de uventede resultatene. En viktig del av prosjektet var å akseptere sjanser, misforståelser og feil, og ikke la arbeidet være for dyrebart til at andre kunne gjøre hva de ville med det.
Gjennom semesteret har studentene sendt hverandre tegninger i posten, og både arbeidet videre på hverandres arbeider, og laget nye arbeider basert de de tilsendte. På denne måten har studentene ved de to skolene hatt en dialog med hverandre gjennom arbeidene sine.
GSA og Khio har også hatt en felles workshop i Glasgow i mars, der studentene ved begge skolene arbeidet sammen, og hadde en 3 dagers utstilling i GSAs Reid Building som viste resultatene. Etter endt workshop har studentene fortsatt å arbeide med tegninger, og et utvalg fra samlingen av utvekslede arbeider vises i utstillingen på Seilduken Galleri. Utstillingen skal også vises på GSAs galleri senere i år.
